Hindus Celebrate Chaitra Navratri

By Delicia Janniere

Chaitra Navratri, a significant Hindu festival, began on April 9, marking a period of devotion and prayer culminating with Ram Navami on the ninth day, honoring Lord Rama’s birth.

Each day of Navratri holds specific prayers and rituals. On the second day, devotees gathered at the Reliance Settlement Sanatan Mandir in Berbice to offer their prayers.

President of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha and Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, addressed the congregation, emphasizing the significance of Durga Ma and the need for inner balance and harmony.

During Navratri, devotees fast and offer prayers to Goddess Durga in nine distinct ways for strength and success.

They abstain from alcohol, non-vegetarian food, tobacco, garlic, and onion, seeking purification and divine blessings.

Homes are adorned, mantras are recited, and Durga and her nine incarnations are worshipped.

The festival is more than just rituals; it encourages embracing attitudes and behaviors conducive to collective well-being.
