The HERO medical team has concluded a week-long health outreach in Region Ten, providing essential services to hundreds of residents across several communities.
The team visited eight medical centers, including Wisroc, One Mile, Vivian Parris, Letitia Holder, and Bamia health centers, as well as extending their services to outlying areas such as Malali, Muraitairo, and Kwakwani.
During their visit, the medical professionals conducted a range of services including eye tests, blood sugar and pressure tests, dental care, and general health assessments.
This outreach revealed a significant prevalence of hypertension and diabetes among the local Afro and Indo Guyanese populations.
Dr. David Keen, a volunteer with HERO, observed that many residents have high levels of hypertension and diabetes, attributed to dietary habits that include excessive starch consumption and insufficient intake of green leafy vegetables.
He highlighted the need for dietary adjustments, recommending increased consumption of fruits and vegetables and reduced sugar and salt intake.
The HERO team, known for their long-standing commitment to improving public health, will be followed by a surgical team of over 20 professionals next week.
This upcoming team will focus on performing orthopedic surgeries in Georgetown.
HERO, a nonprofit organization, remains dedicated to enhancing health and well-being through its medical and educational outreach initiatives.
