Christianburg resident Herman Haynes marked his 104th birthday today in the company of three of his five surviving children, relatives, and well-wishers at his home in Alstrom Alley.
Born on January 20, 1921, Mr. Haynes, the last surviving sibling of seven, remains youthful and jovial, attributing his remarkable longevity to the love of his children and his sincere faith.
Despite his age and declining health, he expressed deep gratitude for reaching over 100 years of life, considering it a divine blessing.
A father to nine children, Mr. Haynes has five surviving, with two residing in the United States.
As he reflected on his life, he acknowledged the many hardships he faced but credited his faith for the strength to endure.
In an interview, Mr. Haynes shared, “I feel wonderful, wonderful to know that I have made it to this despite the hardship I went through in life…What a blessing.”
He added that although not in the best of health, he remains hopeful and prays for another year of life.
His son, Joseph Haynes, who is 67 years old, expressed his gratitude for having his father around.
He acknowledged the challenges they faced but praised God’s role in his father’s continued vitality.
“Well, I feel great to have him around at this age. I know it was difficult along the way but through it all, I can say that God is responsible for him to be where he is,” Joseph shared.
Mr. Haynes worked with the Bauxite Company before retiring.
Today, he celebrated his milestone birthday with his family, doctors, caretakers, and friends, reflecting on the extraordinary changes Guyana has undergone over the years.
