Guyana is set to launch hemp cultivation in Region Six, with small farmers playing a pivotal role in the initiative.
The Ministry of Agriculture has allocated over 30,000 acres of land in the region, which will be divided for hemp, corn, and sugarcane production.
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has emphasized that small farmers will be the primary beneficiaries, each being allocated 1 or 2 acres to begin hemp production.
This initiative is expected to provide significant economic benefits, tapping into the growing hemp industry.
Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, confirmed that a special implementation committee has been formed to oversee the development of the allocated lands.
Additionally, other farmers in the region have expressed interest in returning to the sugar industry, which is also set to recommence.
To support these agricultural developments, approximately $2 billion has been allocated in this year’s budget.
The hemp project is expected to offer new economic opportunities and enhance regional agricultural diversity.
