-Significantly increasing the risk of flooding
The Hydrometeorological Service has issued a stern warning for residents across Guyana as a prolonged period of heavy rainfall is set to settle over the country starting Thursday, March 26, and lasting through Sunday, March 29, 2026.
According to a special information bulletin issued on Wednesday, this sustained weather pattern is expected to significantly elevate the risk of flooding throughout the nation, with a particular threat posed to low-lying communities and regions with inadequate drainage systems.
The current meteorological outlook suggests that moisture plumes tied to the Intertropical Convergence Zone are converging directly along northern Guyana.
This atmospheric setup is further intensified by an upper-level wind pattern that promotes significant moisture instability.

While the entire country will feel the effects of this system, southern Guyana is predicted to become especially unstable starting Thursday. These combined factors will result in persistent overcast skies, widespread showers, and intense periods of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by scattered thunderstorms.
Coastal regions are anticipated to bear the brunt of the activity, with rainfall totals generally ranging between 40 mm and 100 mm within any 24-hour window.
In some localised areas, the volume of water could even exceed the 100 mm mark in a single day. This deluge is expected to create hazardous conditions on the ground, including localised flooding and significant water accumulation on roadways that will likely impair driving visibility and safety.
Beyond the threat of rising waters, the public should prepare for increasingly rough seas and the potential for lightning and gusty winds.
These conditions may lead to the uprooting of trees and damage to vulnerable infrastructure. Daily life will likely see disruptions as outdoor activities, construction projects, and sporting events are hampered by the weather.
The Hydrometeorological Service urges citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the wet weather persists into the conclusion of the week.
Over the last 24 hours, rainfall totals across Guyana, especially over northern Guyana (Regions 2, 4, 6), have indicated values above 75.0 mm (3.0 inches) over some communities.
Several stations, including Charity and Onderneeming in Region Two, Timehri on the East Bank of Demerara and North Yakusari in Region 6 have exceeded or closely matched their long-term monthly average, with the rainfall experienced within the 24-hour period.
