Health Minister Advocates for HPV Vaccine Uptake Amidst Rising Cervical Cancer Cases

Cervical cancer, the second-highest cause of death in women, is being addressed with urgency by the Ministry of Health.

This year, the ministry diagnosed 102 persons with Cervical Cancer, prompting Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony to emphasize the importance of adopting preventative measures, including increased uptake of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV).

Dr. Anthony highlighted that testing measures such as Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIAs), pap smears, and HPV testing play a crucial role in detecting abnormal cells.

Early detection is essential for effective treatment and better outcomes.

The main focus of prevention outlined by the Health Minister is the administration of the HPV vaccine.

Originally designed for children, new guidelines allow individuals aged 16 and over to receive two doses six months apart.

Despite the vaccine’s availability, Minister Anthony expressed concern about existing hesitancy, stressing that preventing cervical cancer is paramount for overall health.

The Minister’s call to action aligns with the rising cases of cervical cancer, emphasizing the need for increased awareness, vaccination coverage, and proactive healthcare measures.
