Guyana’s Harpy Eagles secured their first victory in the 2024 Regional Super 50 tournament with an impressive eight-wicket win over the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in a rain-affected match.
The Harpy Eagles won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Spinner Versammy Permaul was the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for 24 runs from his 9 overs.
He set the tone for the Leewards’ collapse, dismissing Justin Greaves early before returning to dismantle the middle order.
Pacer Nial Smith supported well with 2 for 42, while Ashmead Nedd contributed with 2 for 19.
Isia Thorne and Keemo Paul also chipped in with a wicket each.
Despite some resistance from Leeward Islands captain Rahkeem Cornwall (36) and Jeremiah Louis (34), the Hurricanes were bowled out for 139 in 34.2 overs.
In response, the match was reduced to 41 overs due to rain.
The Harpy Eagles had a rocky start with Tagenarine Chanderpaul departing for just 3 runs.
However, Matthew Nandu (50) and captain Tevin Imlach, who remained unbeaten on 69, led the charge, comfortably chasing down the target.
The team reached 141 for 2 in just 27.5 overs.
Oshane Thomas and Rahkeem Cornwall were the lone wicket-takers for the Leewards.
This win provides much-needed relief for the Harpy Eagles, who had lost their previous two matches to the Windward Islands and Barbados, and had been forced to settle for a no-result against the Combined Campuses and Colleges due to rain.
