In a thrilling encounter at the National Stadium, Providence, the Hampshire Hawks triumphed over the Rangpur Riders in a nail-biting super over during Match 2 of the inaugural ExxonMobil Global Super League on Wednesday night.
After a slow start in the power play, Hampshire Hawks managed to post a total of 132 runs.
Shan Masood anchored the innings with a steady 56 off 41 balls, with Ali Orr contributing a steady 28.
Despite their early struggles, Hampshire’s late surge ensured they reached a defendable total.
Rangpur Riders’ Zak Chappell impressed with the ball, claiming a sensational 5 wickets for just 23 runs in his four-over spell, while Harmeet Singh contributed with 2 wickets for 13 runs.
Chasing 133 runs, the Riders started strong in the power play, gathering 57 runs despite losing three wickets.
However, a late collapse in the 17th over turned the tide in favor of the Hawks.
The Riders leveled the scores with two runs off the final ball, forcing the game into a dramatic super over.
In the super over, Hampshire Hawks held their composure, surpassing the Riders’ 12 runs.
Needing five runs from the final two balls, Liam Dawson sealed the victory with a massive six over mid-wicket, guiding the Hawks to 14 for 1.
After the match, Masood reflected on the importance of a strong start in the tournament.
He also praised the grit and determination shown by the team, despite missing one of their key players, James Vince. “Hampshire is one of the best teams from England, and they’ve shown great squad depth,” said Masood.
Game 3 of the tournament will see the Amazon Warriors face off against Victoria on Friday at 19:00 hours at Providence.
