GWI’s Struggles Amidst Power Outages

Shaikh Baksh, the Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), shed light on the challenges the company is facing due to the recent surge in power outages across the nation.

This, he explains, has significantly impacted GWI’s ability to provide water services to consumers in various regions.

When power outages occur, it takes time to restore the water balance.

Baksh expressed hope that the situation would be addressed promptly.

Baksh highlighted that Bartica, Region Six, has been particularly affected, even though GWI has a good water supply available.

The effects on their wells and treatment plants have hindered the supply of water.

The situation is further compounded by the increased demand for water, exacerbated by the El Nino phenomenon, which continues to dry up various water sources.

Region Six is also grappling with power shortages, as the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) struggles to meet the surging demands for electricity, particularly due to the rising temperatures leading to increased usage of air conditioning units and fans.
