GWI Repairs 12-Inch Water Main in Georgetown

December 14, 2024

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) successfully repaired a 12-inch water main in Georgetown after an intense overnight operation.

The pipeline, located at the intersection of Aubrey Barker Road and Mandela Avenue, was damaged during ongoing works by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).

The break, which occurred on Friday afternoon, disrupted water supply to several districts, including South Ruimveldt, leaving hundreds of households without access.

GWI’s Chief Executive Officer, Shaik Baksh, was on-site for most of the operation and commended the team and the Guyana Fire Service for their tireless efforts in completing the challenging repairs.

The repair work faced significant difficulties, including water seeping into the area, which delayed progress.

However, Baksh confirmed that the team worked diligently through the night and into the early morning to restore the vital infrastructure.

To facilitate the repairs, GWI temporarily shut off the water supply to affected areas, ensuring a plan was in place to restore service as quickly as possible.

Additionally, mobile generators were installed in Festival City and the North and South Ruimveldt areas to mitigate potential water shortages caused by power outages.

GWI has assured the public that they will continue to monitor the situation to prevent further disruptions and maintain the stability of the water network.
