The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is actively working to resolve significant water discoloration issues affecting central Georgetown.
High turbidity and sediment levels at the Shelter Belt intake have disrupted the water supply.
The problem emerged following heavy rains, which washed sediment from a recently dredged conservancy into the water source.
GWI’s Chief Executive Officer, Shaik Baskh, confirmed that the company has been working around the clock to address the situation.
Efforts include constant flushing of the system to remove sediment buildup.
Water Quality Specialist, Dr. Deon Anderson, noted that turbidity levels have surged from the usual 15-20 units to as high as 500 units, straining the filtration and sedimentation systems.
GWI is coordinating with related agencies to manage and mitigate such issues in the future and assures the public that improvements are expected shortly.
