Guyanese Urged to Prioritize Diabetes Screening on World Diabetes Day

In light of World Diabetes Day, Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Dave Persaud has raised concerns about the high prevalence of diabetes in Guyana.

Dr. Persaud is urging the public to proactively visit their local healthcare facilities for diabetes screening.

The alarming number of diabetic patients in Guyana is coupled with an increase in other chronic conditions like obesity and hypertension, affecting even children.

Currently, 79 children are registered with the Health Ministry’s diabetic registry, ensuring they receive essential care and treatment services at no cost.

Dr. Persaud emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet, 30 minutes of daily physical activity, and awareness of family genetic history to prevent diabetes.

However, he underscores that annual testing is crucial for maintaining individual health, especially since pre-diabetic individuals may not exhibit noticeable symptoms.

World Diabetes Day, observed on November 14 under the theme “Access to Diabetes Care,” serves as a reminder to prioritize health screenings and take preventive measures against diabetes.
