Guyanese Clubs Secure Bronze Medals at T&T Ventures Intl Indoor Hockey Tournament

Three Guyanese hockey clubs—GBTI GCC, Bounty GCC, and Saints—clinched bronze medals in the Ventures International Invitational Indoor Hockey Tournament held at the Woodbrook Youth Facility in Trinidad.

The tournament spanned from Wednesday to Sunday and featured competitive matches among top teams from the region in various categories, including men, women, and veterans.

In the men’s category, Saints displayed a commendable performance, securing victories against UWI Blackbird and Notre Dame before succumbing to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service unit.

Despite a loss to Queen’s Park Oval in the semifinals, Saints bounced back to claim third place with a 3-1 victory over TTPS. The TT Defence Force emerged as the champions in the men’s category.

Saints’ coach, Robert Fernandes, highlighted the valuable experience gained by the young team, emphasizing their limited exposure to indoor match practice before the tournament.

In the women’s category, GBTI GCC faced off against fellow Guyanese team Saints, securing a 3-0 victory.

Although GBTI suffered a loss to Magnolia, they rebounded with a 4-0 win against the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.

After a narrow defeat in the semifinals against Paragon, GBTI claimed the third-place spot by defeating Ventures women 2-1 in the playoff.

Magnolia secured the top position, with Paragon finishing second.

In the veterans category, Bounty GCC faced initial challenges but rebounded with a significant 13-1 victory against Notre Dame.

Despite an 8-1 loss to Trinidad Police Service in the semifinals, Bounty GCC secured the bronze medal by defeating Fatima 5-3 in the third-place contest.

Queen’s Park emerged as the veterans’ champions, with Trinidad Police Service securing the second position.

Kevin Spencer of Guyana stood out in the veterans’ category, earning the title of the highest goal-scorer with 11 goals overall.

The successful participation of Guyanese clubs in the T&T Ventures Intl Indoor Hockey Tournament reflects the country’s growing presence and competitiveness in regional hockey events.
