Guyana’s Women’s Hockey Squad Gears Up for Pan Am Challenge in Bermuda

By Travis Seymour

Preparations are in full swing for Guyana’s national women’s hockey team as they prepare to compete in the Pan Am Challenge series set to take place in Bermuda from September 20th to 28th, 2024, at the National Sports Center in Pembroke.

Phillips Fernandes, Head of the Guyana Hockey Board, has reported that the selection process is nearing its final stages, with the team expected to be narrowed down from 24 players to 16.

Fernandes highlighted that while challenges have arisen due to unsuitable playing conditions caused by the persistent rainy weather, the team is making the best use of the all-weather mat at the GCC ground.

Fernandes also mentioned that the team has been training intensively four days a week, focusing on technical and tactical aspects to enhance their performance.

The final squad will be fine-tuned with a strategic approach in preparation for the tournament.

The Women’s Pan American Challenge is a prestigious quadrennial competition organized by the Pan American Hockey Federation.

It serves as a qualification event for the Women’s Pan American Cup. Guyana’s best performance in the tournament was a second-place finish in 2011.
