Guyana’s Vice President: Budget Can’t Accommodate GTU Salary Demands

By Josiah Williams

In a recent press conference at the Office of the President, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo stated that Guyana’s current fiscal framework cannot support the retroactive salary demands made by the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) at this time.

Despite this, the government remains committed to supporting and uplifting teachers in the country.

Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the importance of prudent financial management to avoid potential economic challenges in the future.

He expressed concern that meeting the GTU’s demands could have significant repercussions for the country’s finances down the line.

The GTU has requested a multi-year salary increase agreement retroactive to 2019, among other demands.

However, Dr. Jagdeo pointed out that accommodating these requests would strain the budget and impact other sectors as well.

Regarding the ongoing dispute, Dr. Jagdeo mentioned that the matter is currently in court, with both parties awaiting the court’s ruling.

Previously, mediation was ordered by the court, but the process ended abruptly after a few days.

Dr. Jagdeo reiterated the government’s desire to see teachers return to classrooms and children receive education while also ensuring the fiscal stability of the country.

The outcome of the court’s ruling will likely have significant implications for both the government and the GTU as they seek to resolve the ongoing dispute.
