Guyana’s Tourism Ministry Aims to Boost Visitor Numbers through Events and Conferences in 2024

The Ministry of Tourism in Guyana is strategically planning to leverage its 2024 budget allocation to host more regional and international events, with the ultimate goal of increasing tourist visitation to the country.

Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, Oneidge Waldron, highlighted the efforts to diversify the country’s tourism products.

With an 11% increase in passenger arrivals at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in 2023 and the introduction of over 15 new tourism products, the ministry is keen on exploring avenues beyond traditional tourism.

Minister Waldron emphasized the focus on hosting conferences and events as part of the vision for tourism.

The objective is to attract visitors to Guyana, contributing to the local economy through expenditures by foreign tourists.

In the year 2023, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport recorded over 729,000 passengers, with December alone accounting for 64,134 arrivals.

Minister Waldron sees this as a positive indication of the tangible benefits of the initiatives taken.

The tourism ministry is set to host various conferences, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) conference with the participation of 33 countries.

Minister Waldron believes that such events not only contribute to economic benefits but also enhance the recognition of Guyana’s ecotourism products on the global stage.

As Guyana continues to position itself as an attractive destination, the emphasis on hosting diverse events and conferences aligns with the broader strategy to promote the country’s unique offerings and increase tourism numbers.
