In a historic move, the National Assembly of Guyana has unanimously adopted a motion affirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country while unequivocally denouncing Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo region. The motion serves as a strong statement in response to Venezuela’s planned and controversial referendum on December 3.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir, concluded the session with expressions of unity and support for the motion.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugh Todd commended all Members of Parliament for standing united during this critical moment. He emphasized the significance of the motion in the face of the controversy surrounding Venezuela’s territorial claims.
Minister Todd reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the legal process, emphasizing that the case is currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The administration led by President Irfaan Ali maintains a proactive stance, actively lobbying for international support for Guyana’s cause and condemnation of Venezuela’s actions.
The unanimous adoption of the motion reflects Guyana’s firm stance on defending its territorial integrity through diplomatic and legal channels.
