Guyana’s First Doubles Squash Court to Open This Month as Part of Sports Infrastructure Boost

January 11, 2025

Minister of Sports, Charles Ramson Jr., provided an exciting update on the nation’s sports development during his 2024 end-of-year press conference, announcing that Guyana’s first-ever doubles squash court will officially open this month at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.

The new facility marks a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to enhance its sports infrastructure.

The project, which began with the awarding of the contract last year, has seen rapid progress, with the contractor mobilizing within three to four months.

Minister Ramson noted that the completion of the facility would allow Guyana to continue its push to revolutionize the sports tourism industry by hosting top-tier competitions.

The doubles squash court is part of a broader effort to improve the country’s sports offerings, including renovations at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and the construction of five new stadiums across the nation.

Additionally, the Ministry of Sports is overseeing the completion of athletic stadiums in both Linden and New Amsterdam, further expanding Guyana’s capacity to host international sporting events.

Minister Ramson emphasized the importance of these developments in positioning Guyana as a premier destination for sports tourism, with the aim of bringing significant events to the country.

This, he explained, would contribute to the growth of the nation’s sports tourism sector while providing opportunities for local athletes and enthusiasts.

These projects are expected to significantly enhance Guyana’s sporting landscape in the coming months, with the doubles squash court set to play a key role in elevating the nation’s profile in the global sports community.
