Guyana’s Education Ministry Allocates $135.2 Billion for 2024 Budget

In the latest scrutiny of the 2024 budget estimates, Guyana’s Ministry of Education is set to receive a significant allocation of $135.2 billion, highlighting a strong commitment to enhancing the nation’s education landscape.

The funds are earmarked for various projects and initiatives aimed at improving both physical infrastructure and administrative facilities.

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, provided insights into key aspects of the budget, emphasizing the government’s dedication to advancing educational opportunities for students and educators across the country.

Infrastructure Development: The budget allocates substantial funds for the construction of new secondary schools.

Notable projects include the ongoing construction of Northwest Secondary, Hosororo Secondary, Kwebana Secondary, and the upcoming Waramuri Secondary.

Northwest Secondary, reported to be 70% completed, is expected to be finalized by June 2024, showcasing the government’s commitment to providing modern educational facilities.

Electrical System Upgrades: A significant portion of the budget is dedicated to upgrading electrical systems in primary schools across Georgetown.

Schools such as Sophia, West Ruimveldt, Redeemer, and FE Pollard Primary will benefit from these upgrades, ensuring a safer and more conducive learning environment.

Administrative Facility Rehabilitation: Administrative facilities are also set to undergo rehabilitation, with projects including the Book Distribution Unit in Charlestown.

Additional allocations cover the construction of a concrete pathway and parking lot, the UNESCO building, the Ministry’s annex, and the upgrading of a power distribution system at 21 Brickdam.
