Refuting claims from the opposition that development has been stagnant or exclusionary, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, to the tangible shift in the country’s economic landscape.
“While others deal in talks and we heard many of it for the past two days, the government delivers results,” the Minister asserted, noting that the “pulse” of the economy is healthy, driven by massive growth in the non-oil sector which stood at 14.3 percent in 2025.
He added, “There are some indicators to determine how the pulse of an economy is derived. When you look at growth, that is one of the determining factors. Jobs and income is another determining factor. Prices, inflation is another determining factor. Investment is another determining factor. And consumer spending tops it all. And we have ticked all the boxes.”
The Minister argued that the massive investment in infrastructure acts as a multiplier, stating that every dollar spent on infrastructure increases tenfold the economic dollar value, directly raising the value of land and homes for ordinary Guyanese.
According to Minister Ramraj, in 2025 alone, over 12,000 projects were executed nationwide, creating a massive wave of employment and entrepreneurship.
“This value, when you add all of this, it’s $225 billion valued and this goes into contracts and this goes into people’s pockets,” the minister declared, specifically citing the empowerment of over 10,000 small contractors who have benefited from government projects.
He told the House that the massive investment in roads, bridges, and airstrips is not just about concrete and steel but about the direct elevation of the Guyanese quality of life.
Addressing hinterland infrastructure development, the public works minister shared personal accounts of driving across terrains that were once impassable, such as the route from Paramakatoi to Kato, in Region 8.
“Over the past five years, the government has transformed investment into visible national progress. Under the Ministry of Public Works, over 10,000 roads and 430 bridges have been constructed or rehabilitated over the country. Along with this, 35,000 meters of new sea defense and river defenses have been built and more than 425 meters rehabilitated, strengthening protection for families, businesses and entire community against erosion and flooding,” he said.
