In response to the growing demands in various sectors of the local economy, the Guyanese government, under President Irfaan Ali’s leadership, is formulating a comprehensive migration policy.
This policy aims to strategically address the need for a skilled labor force, particularly in light of the expansion fueled by the oil and gas sector.
Given Guyana’s relatively small population of 750,000, importing foreign labor is considered crucial for the country’s sustained growth.
The plan includes tapping into the 1.5 million-strong Guyanese diaspora for skilled professionals. However, President Ali emphasizes that this endeavor must be approached judiciously, with the ultimate aim of benefiting Guyana and its citizens.
President Ali further underscores the government’s commitment to ongoing efforts in upskilling the local workforce. A significant aspect of this commitment involves the establishment of the National Technical Training Centre, a project valued at 100 million US dollars. This initiative is pivotal in ensuring that Guyanese citizens are integral contributors to the nation’s rapid development across various sectors.
With a substantial portion of Guyanese residing abroad, accounting for over 36 percent of the native-born population, the country boasts one of the largest diaspora populations globally. While the majority is concentrated in North America, significant Guyanese communities are also found in neighboring countries and regions around the world.
The Guyanese government has established a re-migrant scheme, designed to encourage Guyanese citizens living abroad to return and actively participate in the nation’s progress. The scheme offers attractive incentives, such as the ability to import a duty-free motor vehicle and household items.
