Guyana’s Basketball Teams Secure Bronze in Inter-Guiana Games

The Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) saw Guyana’s male and female basketball teams achieving commendable third-place finishes, securing bronze medals in their respective categories.

In the men’s basketball competition, Guyana faced a tough challenge against French Guiana, resulting in a 96-70 loss.

Despite an outstanding performance by Kelon Phillips, who scored a game-high 45 points, the locals struggled to match their opponents throughout the game. Carmelo Man-Son-Hing contributed 14 points to the team’s effort.

The first three quarters proved challenging for Guyana, being outscored 25-17, 20-16, and 33-19.

Although they performed marginally better in the fourth quarter, scoring 20-18, they finished with a total of 70 points, losing by 26 points to their French counterparts.

In another match against Suriname, Guyana faced a 103-77 defeat, with Man-Son-Hing scoring 29 points and Phillips adding 16 points in the loss.

The women’s category also presented its set of challenges for Guyana.

The team lost to Suriname with a score of 50-35, despite Sherel Leacock’s notable performance, leading her team with 12 points.

Suriname’s Beyoncé Teetinie scored a game-high 24 points.

The Guyanese women encountered another setback against French Guiana, suffering a 64-23 defeat.

While the gold medal eluded Guyana in basketball, the teams demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the Inter-Guiana Games, ultimately securing third place in both the male and female categories.
