Guyana’s apiculture industry is projected to experience substantial expansion by the end of this year, as announced by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.
The government’s commitment to developing this sector is part of a broader agricultural development agenda aimed at tapping into the country’s vast and largely undeveloped land suitable for beekeeping.
Minister Mustapha highlighted that a contract signed with Cuba last year, leveraging their extensive experience in honey production, is expected to enhance local capabilities.
With the global honey market anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.2% until 2030, the Guyanese government is keen to capitalize on this opportunity.
Notably, the minister reported a significant increase in honey production in Guyana, even during traditionally low-output periods.
The initiative includes communities in Regions 2 and 9, aiming to boost production further and create new opportunities for local producers.
The rising global demand for pure honey, attributed to its numerous health benefits—such as serving as a natural sweetener and a source of vitamins, minerals, calcium, and antioxidants—underscores the potential for growth in this sector.
Additionally, the anticipated repeal of Trinidad and Tobago’s honey export restrictions will enable Guyana to position itself as a honey exporter within the CARICOM region.
