Guyana’s national zoo will soon undergo massive transformation.

This was announced by President Irfaan Ali at the commissioning of the Guyana/China friendship park.

The long-awaited zoo project follows the government’s collaboration with the The King’s Foundation to help restore the Garden City of Georgetown.

President Ali emphasised that the zoo should be recognized as an important part of Guyana’s cultural heritage.

I’m pleased to announce that the Georgetown Zoo and Botanical Gardens transformation project will commence with an investment that would make it the pride of South America,” he said.

The zoo is expected to be integrated into a wider network of city walkways, connecting green, cultural, commercial, and waterfront areas as part of a broader urban development plan.

This investment will see the full rehabilitation of gardens and water systems, modern zoo infrastructure, improve animal care and containment, visitor facilities’ and accessibilities  upgrades, elevated bridges , pathways and landscape restoration,” he added.

The initiative is in keeping with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, which promotes sustainable tourism while safeguarding the nation’s natural ecosystems.
