Guyana Women’s Cricket Team Triumphs in CG Women’s Super 50 Tournament

In a stunning display of skill and determination, Plaffiana Millington and Niya Latchman led the Guyana women’s cricket team to victory over the Leeward Islands in their first match of the Cricket West Indies CG Women’s Super 50 tournament.

The showdown unfolded at the St Paul’s Sports Complex in St. Kitts and Nevis, where the Leeward Islands women won the toss and opted to field first.

The Guyanese women posted a competitive total of 142 all out in 36.3 overs, with notable contributions from Realeanna Grimmond (37) and opener Shabika Gajnabi (20).

Captain Shamaine Campbell and Vice-captain Cherry-Ann Fraser also chipped in with valuable runs.

With a target of 143 for victory, the Guyana bowlers displayed remarkable prowess, led by Cherry-Ann Fraser, who struck early before being sidelined due to injury.

Plaffiana Millington then spun her way to four crucial wickets for just 10 runs, while Niya Latchman provided valuable support with three wickets for 27 runs.

The Leeward Islands women were eventually dismissed for 86 in 36.5 overs, securing a commanding 56-run victory for Guyana.

In other matches of the tournament, defending champions Barbados suffered a hefty defeat at the hands of Stafanie Taylor’s Jamaican side, losing by a margin of 200 runs.

Batting first, Jamaica posted a formidable total of 289 all-out, with Taylor leading the charge with an impressive 94 off 95 balls.

In response, Barbados could only manage 89 runs, with Taylor and Vanessa Watts claiming two wickets each to seal the victory for Jamaica.

Looking ahead, Guyana will face off against Barbados women in their next match scheduled for March 8.

As the CG Women’s Super 50 tournament unfolds, cricket enthusiasts anticipate more thrilling encounters and stellar performances from the participating teams.
