The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) is embarking on an initiative to assess and elevate the standard of play in preparation for a potential return to South American Confederation sanctioned competitions.
John Flores, an executive of the GVF, revealed that the federation is partnering with the city club Eagles to organize an international club competition at the National Gymnasium later this month.
Flores acknowledged that Guyana has faced challenges in competing effectively against South American counterparts.
In an effort to enhance the level of play, the GVF has adopted a strategic approach, opting to field county teams instead of club teams for this international competition.
Invitations have been extended to club teams from Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad, and French Guiana to participate in both male and female categories.
The ‘Road to Recovery’ tournament’s international edition is scheduled to run from November 24 to 26.
The male teams participating include Demerara, Berbice, Yelico and Yellow Birds from Suriname, Big Sepos from Trinidad and Tobago, and Amazonia from Brazil.
Female teams, divided into two groups, consist of a combined Guyana team, Amazonia from Brazil, a Cayenne team, Yelico from Suriname, and Trinidad’s Big Sepos.
The event has garnered sponsorship from companies such as Digicel, Silvie’s Industrial, Guyoil, Umami, and Stem Procurement Agency.
This move by the GVF underscores a commitment to raising the standard of volleyball in Guyana and positioning the country for a successful return to South American Confederation competitions.
The competition not only provides a platform for local teams to showcase their talent but also serves as a crucial step in assessing and improving the overall standard of play in preparation for future international engagements.
