President Dr. Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the United States, emphasising that cooperation between the two countries must be grounded in mutual respect, shared benefits and regional prosperity.
Speaking during an interview with CNN anchor and Chief National Security Analyst Jim Sciutto, President Ali rejected suggestions that Guyana’s increasingly close relationship with Washington could compromise its independence, stressing that the country remains focused on partnerships that advance its national interests.
“We have made it very clear that we are deeply interested in partnership, working together with the U.S. We see the U.S. as an important ally of Guyana,” the President declared.
He underscored the importance of ensuring that the relationship contributes meaningfully to economic development and stability across the Caribbean.
“And the partnership that we built must be built on shared values, shared benefit, and the joint development and prosperity of our region,” Ali added.
The President also addressed Guyana’s rapidly expanding oil and gas industry, acknowledging that the existing Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) with ExxonMobil, signed under the previous administration, may not offer the most favourable terms for the country.
However, he maintained that respecting contractual obligations remains essential to Guyana’s credibility as an investment destination.
“The production sharing agreement with Exxon was signed by the last government. And we recognize that the sanctity of contract is important,” Ali explained.
“We recognize that we have entered into a contract and whilst it may not be a contract that offers the best deal to the country, it is a contract that we have entered into as a country. And what we are doing now is maximizing the benefit,” he stated.
President Ali further disclosed plans to expand opportunities for Guyanese citizens and local businesses to participate in the energy sector, including initiatives that could allow ordinary families to invest in energy projects and earn financial returns.
Meanwhile, on the longstanding border controversy with Venezuela, the President reiterated Guyana’s commitment to a peaceful resolution through the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
He stressed the importance of respecting international law and safeguarding Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
