In a historic move, Guyana is set to participate in the 2024 World Indoor Masters World Cup in Nottingham, England, with its first-ever under-45 side.
Led by Phillip Fernandes, the head of the Guyana Hockey Board, preparations are well underway for this milestone event.
The competition, organized by the World Masters Hockey body, is scheduled to take place from March 28th to April 1st in Nottingham, England.
Guyana’s under-45 male team will make its debut on the international stage, representing the country’s growing presence in the world of hockey.
Fernandes expressed his enthusiasm for fielding a strong team, highlighting the significance of this opportunity for Guyanese players to gain valuable experience in international masters’ competition.
He emphasized the increasing prominence of such events in the global hockey scene, noting the trends that indicate a growing interest and participation.
Moreover, Fernandes believes that Guyana’s participation in the World Cup will benefit the local hockey scene, providing inspiration and motivation for aspiring players back home.
The World Cup will feature male and female national teams from various countries competing across different age groups, including over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60 categories.
Guyana’s team will face formidable opponents from countries like Germany, France, England, Canada, Bangladesh, Australia, and Wales.
The tournament is set to kick off at the David Ross Sport Village at the University of Nottingham Park in the United Kingdom, marking a significant moment for Guyanese hockey on the international stage.
