Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the PPP/C, asserts that the Guyanese government will demand full reciprocity in trade matters within the CARICOM region.

This declaration comes in response to recent trade issues involving DDL’s exports to Trinidad and Tobago.

During a press conference, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the necessity for equitable treatment of goods and exports between CARICOM member states.

He stated that Guyana has advocated for reduced trade barriers in the Caribbean to promote wealth and trade growth.

Dr. Jagdeo underlined that phytosanitary or other restrictions should not impede fair trade practices.

Dr. Jagdeo stressed the importance of fair treatment for Guyanese exports in Trinidadian markets, mirroring the treatment received by Trinidadian goods in Guyana.

He highlighted historical trade relations between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, emphasizing the need for mutual respect in trade practices.

Addressing past issues with shipping products to Trinidad, particularly animal-based products, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the need for resolution.

Recent events, such as DDL’s revelation of returned milk products and held containers of flavored waters, underscore the importance of addressing trade barriers.

While the Trinidadian Ministry of Trade denied allegations made by DDL, claiming it was DDL’s Trinidadian distribution partner that returned the shipment, Dr. Jagdeo asserts that such issues must be addressed promptly and fairly to ensure smooth trade relations within CARICOM.
