Guyana to Host Largest Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior Boxing Championship

The National Gymnasium in Guyana will be the venue for the highly anticipated Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior Championships from August 16-18.

This year’s event is poised to be the largest ever, according to Steve Ninvalle, President of the Guyana Boxing Association.

Ninvalle confirmed that this year’s championship will see a significant increase in participation, with final trials for boxers scheduled to take place this weekend at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Gym, followed by an encampment.

In preparation for the tournament, the association has held over twelve under-16 competitions in recent months, including five in the last three.

Ninvalle emphasized the importance of these events for maintaining a robust pipeline of young talent in the sport.

He highlighted that all arrangements are in place to ensure the championship is a memorable one, thanks to the generous support from the Guyana Olympic Association and the Government of Guyana.

The country’s boxing team is coming off a strong performance at the OECS Boxing Championship in St. Lucia, where they secured second place behind Trinidad and Tobago.

Guyana’s team earned four gold and two silver medals with only six boxers, demonstrating their competitive edge ahead of the upcoming regional event.

The OECS Championship featured several participating nations, some of which will compete in the forthcoming Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior Championships in Guyana.
