President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced plans for Guyana to embark on creating an Economic Model for Biodiversity and Ecological Services, underscoring the critical role of biodiversity in everyday life.
Biodiversity encompasses essential services such as food provision, clean water, fuel, recreation, and temperature regulation.
However, President Ali highlighted the global absence of a unified model for managing and preserving biodiversity, exacerbated by threats from climate change which accelerates biodiversity loss.
The Environmental Protection Agency will lead the crafting of this economic policy as part of broader efforts to enhance climate security and environmental sustainability in Guyana.
President Ali also announced alignment of Guyana’s environmental standards and legislative changes with those of the United States.
This decision aims to strengthen environmental governance and harmonize regulatory frameworks to address shared challenges effectively.
In collaboration with the King’s Foundation, the government is advancing plans to transform Georgetown into a sustainable, climate-friendly city.
This initiative includes the modernization of two parks into green spaces, intended to showcase international best practices in urban sustainability.
These developments underscore Guyana’s commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience, positioning the nation as a proactive player in global environmental governance.
