Guyana is set to become the first country in the Caribbean to conduct human leukocyte antigen (HLA) testing for organ transplants.
The announcement was made by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, during a recent media engagement.
Currently, the country sends samples for HLA testing abroad, specifically to Miami.
However, the Ministry of Health has acquired the necessary equipment to perform the tests locally.
The system is expected to be fully operational before the end of 2024, with trained personnel in place.
HLA testing is a critical component in determining the compatibility of human organs before transplant surgeries, and this new capability will also support the establishment of a local donor registry.
This development will expedite the process of matching organ donors with recipients and ensure adherence to global standards for organ transplantation.
By conducting HLA testing in Guyana, the health sector will benefit from faster turnaround times for test results, enhancing the country’s organ transplant program.
