Guyana Teachers Union Threatens Industrial Action Over Salary Adjustments

The Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) is on the brink of industrial action as it demands the government to present a parallel proposal addressing salary adjustments for teachers.

While the Ministry of Education recently released a circular from the Finance Ministry to rectify the salaries of teachers paid below their minimum scale, GTU President Mark Lyte highlighted that only a handful of teachers employed in 2016 were affected. He emphasized that teachers are still awaiting salary adjustments from the government amid ongoing economic challenges.

Lyte reminded that a proposal was submitted in 2020 to address both salary and non-salary matters.

He further disclosed that a number of educators have been absent from school between yesterday and today, and this trend is likely to continue.

President Irfaan Ali has announced plans for consultations with teachers upon his return from the United States. These consultations aim to involve stakeholders in the development of a comprehensive set of measures to enhance the well-being of teachers.
