Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn has unveiled a comprehensive plan to tackle the increasing use of synthetic drugs in Guyana, emphasizing the need for community engagement in the fight against this growing menace.

Expressing deep concern over the emergence of new synthetic drugs in the local market, Minister Benn highlighted the infiltration of these substances into schools and rave parties across the country.

Notably, these synthetic drugs include substances like ecstasy, posing significant challenges for law enforcement agencies.

Addressing the challenges faced by law enforcement, Minister Benn raised awareness about individuals attempting to import synthetic drugs from the United States.

Often, these individuals claim ignorance of the illegal nature of these drugs or assert that they are intended for medicinal purposes.

In response to the surge in synthetic drug use, law enforcement agencies, including the police and the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), are actively working to address the issue.

The strategic approach involves dismantling drug blocks within communities, identifying operatives, and conducting educational initiatives.

Efforts extend to various communities, camps, and areas, with increased visits and engagement from law enforcement.

The minister stressed the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, and community leaders to effectively combat the rising synthetic drug problem.

As part of the comprehensive plan, Minister Benn is urging greater community engagement and educational outreach.

He calls on parents, teachers, and community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals involved in the distribution of synthetic substances.

The ultimate goal of the comprehensive plan is to protect young people from the dangers associated with illicit synthetic substances.

By combining law enforcement strategies, community engagement, and educational initiatives, Guyana aims to address the root causes of the synthetic drug issue and safeguard the well-being of its population, particularly the youth.
