December 11, 2024

The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) is set to host its final tournament of the year, the One Guyana President’s Cup, from December 12 to 21 at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue.

This ten-day event will feature 12 categories, with over 50 players competing in junior, senior, and doubles divisions.

More than 100 matches are scheduled, promising an action-packed conclusion to the squash season.

The tournament marks the first significant use of the new courts at the National Racquet Centre.

The Games Committee Chair of the GSA, Deji Dias, emphasized the versatility of the facility, highlighting its capability to host both singles and doubles matches.

This includes adjustable courts that can be converted for different game formats, a feature showcased in this unique event.

For the first time in nearly two decades, players will compete for monetary prizes.

Both the men’s and women’s champions will receive $125,000, with $50,000 awarded to the runners-up and $20,000 for third place.

The prize money structure aligns with international standards set by the Professional Squash Association.

The One Guyana President’s Cup is sponsored by the Ministry of Sport and the National Sports Commission, demonstrating continued support for the development of squash in Guyana.

The tournament promises to deliver exciting competition while showcasing the state-of-the-art National Racquet Centre and fostering growth in the local squash community.
