Guyana Shines in FESUPO Regional Powerlifting Championships

In an impressive display of strength and skill, Guyana wrapped up their participation in the 10th Annual FESUPO Regional Powerlifting Championships in Lima, Peru, securing a total of 21 medals.

The final Guyanese competitor, 89-year-old Naranjan Singh, dominated the 83kg M4 category, claiming gold in both the squat and bench press. Singh’s exceptional performance extended to the South American Men’s Equipped Bench Press Championships, where he clinched another gold in his weight class.

This remarkable feat capped off Guyana’s successful medal haul, which included 14 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

Among the standout performers was Wazim Mohamed (93kg M1 class), who not only outperformed his opponent but also set a new Fesupo Men’s master’s 1 deadlift record. Mohamed’s winning total of 677.5kg solidified his dominance in the competition.

In the Men’s Open 93kg category, Leroy ‘Trotman secured the overall bronze, along with bronze medals in the squat and deadlift events.

Kheon Evans, a debutant for Guyana, displayed a commendable performance in the 83kg Open division, though he didn’t secure a top-three placement.

Similarly, Bjorn Williams faced tough competition in the 105kg Open division.

On the opening day of the championships, Sarah Sanmogan, competing in the 69kg Junior category, showcased her prowess with four gold and one silver medal. Keisha Abrigo, in the 76kg Open category, demonstrated outstanding performance, securing both deadlift and overall gold medals.

The success of the Guyanese team was made possible through the support of various sponsors, including the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, National Sports Commission, Guyana Olympic Association, John Fernandes Limited, the National Milling Company of Guyana, and 592Tees.
