In 2023, Guyana experienced a notable decline in new HIV cases, according to a report from Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony.
The minister stated that the country recorded 238 new HIV cases, signaling a positive trend.
However, he highlighted that approximately 9,000 individuals in Guyana are living with HIV.
Minister Anthony emphasized that out of the people living with HIV, 6,558 individuals are currently on treatment.
The Health Ministry’s significant investment in a 105-million-dollar viral load machine at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory has enabled the monitoring of viral loads.
This technology helps assess the effectiveness of treatment and determine viral suppression, crucial for preventing the transmission of the disease.
The report also noted a decline in tuberculosis (TB) cases, a positive development in the country’s healthcare landscape.
Minister Anthony highlighted the progress by comparing the current TB cases to those in 2019, revealing a decrease from 4,198 cases to 337 cases in the reported period.
These updates were provided in the NCN Health report, sponsored by Essential Care Pharmacy and GTM Insurance.
The efforts to combat HIV and TB showcase the commitment of Guyana’s health sector to improving public health outcomes.
