In a significant milestone, Guyana has become the first country in the Western Hemisphere to finalize the Canadian Sovereign Loan Programme, aimed at bolstering the Human Services Sector.

The ceremonial signing of this groundbreaking agreement took place at the Canadian High Commissioner’s Residence in Bel Air Gardens, marking a momentous occasion for both countries.

Under this 10-year sovereign loan valued at 120 million dollars, Canada aims to support Guyana in generating beneficial social, economic, and environmental outcomes for its citizens.

Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development for Canada, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in fostering development.

Senior Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, expressed his appreciation for the loan, emphasizing its substantial impact on Guyana’s development trajectory.

He noted that this agreement is yet another testament to the longstanding and special relationship between Canada and Guyana.

Furthermore, Dr. Singh highlighted the significant contribution of this sovereign loan programme intermediated through the Inter-American Development Bank.

This milestone makes Guyana the third country, following Ukraine and Jordan, to successfully complete a Canadian Sovereign Loan Programme, solidifying its commitment to enhancing social services and fostering national development.
