The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) is prioritizing the development of its 15’s rugby team in the first half of 2025, as the national rugby scene looks to strengthen its foundations for the future.
GRFU President Ryan Dey, who is currently serving his second term, explained that the decision to focus on the 15’s format is a strategic move due to the developmental impact it has on the sport in Guyana.
Dey emphasized that 15’s rugby is the complete form of the sport, helping players improve their fitness and overall performance.
He stated that working closely with coach Larry Adonis and bringing in rugby talent like Theodore Henry would elevate the team’s capabilities, making them more well-rounded.
The team is set to begin preparations this Saturday, with their training building up to the President and Vice President’s 15’s competition next month.
Dey also mentioned that the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports is supportive of the initiative but acknowledged that some scheduling challenges may arise.
Guyana’s national rugby team last competed in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens tournament in Trinidad and Tobago in November.
The team faced Jamaica in the quarterfinals but was defeated 38-14 on a wet surface.
The squad was coached by Claudius Butts, with Elwin Chase serving as assistant coach and former national captain Ryan Gonslaves as manager.
The GRFU’s push for the 15’s team is expected to bring a fresh wave of energy and commitment to the sport as they look ahead to the rest of the year.
