The Guyana rifle shooting team successfully defended its title at the 2024 West Indies Short Range Shooting Championship, held at the Timehri Rifle Ranges.
Despite facing challenging conditions with intense heat and shifting winds, Guyana demonstrated resilience after trailing behind Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda following the 300-yard range due to equipment issues.
However, a strong showing at the 500-yard and 600-yard ranges allowed them to surpass their rivals, amassing a total score of 1091.46 points.
This secured their victory, edging out Antigua (1084.52) and Jamaica (1053.39), with Barbados finishing fourth with a score of 1017.40.
Antigua’s Noah St. Clair was the top individual performer, claiming the prestigious Wogart Trophy with an impressive 147.16 points.
In the concurrent International Short Range Team Match, the United States made an impactful debut, clinching the Gold Medal with a score of 863.60 points, while Guyana earned the Silver Medal with 831.35 points.
The Bermuda Shield, awarded for the highest combined individual and team scores, was presented to Jamaican shooter Dwaine Forde.
The U.S. team also dominated the individual competition, sweeping the podium with first, second, and third-place finishes.
Barbados’ Joshua Trotman delivered a surprise win in the West Indies Individual Championship.
Looking ahead, Barbados is set to host the 2025 championship, with Trinidad and Tobago scheduled to take the spotlight in 2026.
The Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) expressed gratitude for the event’s success, thanking Patron President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and other supporters for their contributions.
The victory solidifies Guyana’s position as a dominant force in the regional shooting competition.
