Guyana Produces 18,000 Gallons of Honey in 2024

Guyana’s honey production has reached an impressive milestone of approximately 18,000 gallons for the year, marking a significant achievement for the apiculture industry.

Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, shared this development at the inaugural Honey Fest hosted by the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) in Mon Repos.

The remarkable increase in honey production, compared to just over 2,000 gallons in 2023, was credited to substantial government investment and a renewed national interest in beekeeping.

The government allocated over $200 million to the sector last year, distributing more than 5,000 hives to aspiring honey producers.

Additionally, the GLDA collaborated with Cuban experts to train locals in bee rearing and honey production techniques.

Minister Mustapha emphasized the government’s commitment to making Guyana a leading honey-producing nation.

“We have targeted areas across the country to ensure economic benefits for communities while producing honey at a high standard,” he stated.

Guyana’s vast and diverse ecosystems, ranging from mangroves to forests, allow for the production of various types of honey.

Approximately nine per cent of the honey is sold domestically, while the majority is exported to markets in Barbados and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The success of this sector highlights the potential for further economic development and the benefits of strategic investments in sustainable industries.
