The Guyana Prison Service’s Welfare and Corrections Department is taking significant steps to support former inmates in their reintegration into society through the “Fresh Start Initiative.”
Tessa McGarrell, the Second Officer in charge of Welfare and Corrections, outlined the program’s approach.
Inmates who complete an 18-month training program, gaining exposure to various skill sets, become eligible for the initiative.
These individuals are provided with kits tailored to their trained skill, enabling them to become self-employed entrepreneurs upon release.
Continuous guidance is offered, ensuring former prisoners understand the proper utilization of their kits. Follow-up visits are conducted to oversee progress and address any queries or concerns.
The Fresh Start Programme is designed to break the cycle of criminal recidivism, emphasizing occupational training.
By equipping inmates with essential job skills, the program seeks to enhance their employability upon reentry into society.
This initiative demonstrates a commitment to fostering second chances and creating opportunities for individuals to rebuild their lives.
