The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) is collaborating with the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI) and the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) to introduce diverse training programs aimed at rehabilitating female inmates.
This multifaceted approach to inmate rehabilitation was highlighted by Abeid DeCunha, Administrator of the Prisons School, during the televised program ‘Prison in Focus.’
The initiative seeks to equip female inmates with the necessary knowledge and skills to become entrepreneurs and self-sufficient members of society upon their release.
As part of these efforts, the GPS will launch a Prison Trade Instructor Training program in partnership with CPCE, marking the first-ever initiative of its kind.
DeCunha also announced plans to collaborate with the GWLI to introduce the Women’s Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (WIIN) programs at female prisons.
Approximately 65 female prisoners are expected to participate in these programs, which aim to empower inmates through practical training and resources for starting their own businesses.
Additionally, the GPS is working closely with the Board of Industrial Training and the Ministry of Labour to certify one hundred prisoners in prior learning assessment across various areas.
This comprehensive rehabilitative effort includes providing the Fresh Start initiative kit to support inmates as they transition back into society.
DeCunha emphasized the GPS’s commitment to pioneering creative techniques to facilitate the redemption and reintegration of inmates.
By offering training programs and resources, the GPS aims to break the cycle of recidivism and support inmates in building a better future for themselves post-incarceration.
