As the Guyana Prison Service celebrates its 41st anniversary under the theme “Year of Transformation,” efforts to enhance rehabilitation programs for inmates and build capacity among prison officers are underway.

This dual approach aims to create a more supportive environment for both inmates and staff, with a focus extending beyond infrastructure improvements to foster growth and reintegration.

Senior Superintendent Olivia Cox, Officer in Charge at Camp Street Prison, highlighted that programs now emphasize family reconciliation, equipping inmates with skills for peaceful interaction with loved ones and enhancing their ability to reintegrate with society post-release.

The program includes guidance on managing relationships and remaining calm in challenging situations, helping inmates to rebuild familial connections.

At Lusignan Prison, Senior Superintendent Deoraj Gyandat reported significant infrastructure improvements, including new buildings to provide inmates with more comfortable accommodations.

This, Gyandat noted, is an important aspect of rehabilitation, as a more comfortable setting supports mental well-being and personal growth.

In line with its ongoing modernization, the Guyana Prison Service is also exploring an online booking system for family visitations, allowing relatives to schedule appointments more easily.

This initiative reflects the service’s commitment to transforming the prison experience and supporting positive inmate rehabilitation.
