The Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department has observed a decline in fatal accidents associated with Electric Bikes (E-Bikes), marking a positive trend in road safety.
Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, the Traffic Chief, addressed concerns regarding E-Bike ownership and emphasized the need for responsible behavior among owners and riders.
Singh highlighted a prevalent issue where adults allow underage individuals to operate E-Bikes on public roadways, a practice deemed illegal and hazardous.
He urged owners to prioritize safety and comply with traffic regulations, emphasizing the risks associated with permitting unlicensed individuals to operate these vehicles.
In a recent interview, Singh disclosed that only one fatality involving an E-Bike has been reported this year, attributing this reduction to enhanced enforcement efforts and increased public awareness.
Overall, there has been a 19 percent decrease in fatal accidents compared to the same period last year, reflecting progress in road safety initiatives.
Despite these positive developments, Singh cautioned against complacency and emphasized the importance of sustained vigilance.
He addressed misconceptions about road safety, stressing the significance of pedestrian awareness and highlighting CCTV footage showcasing reckless behavior on major roadways.
The Traffic Department remains committed to improving road safety through a multifaceted approach involving education, enforcement, and infrastructure enhancements.
Singh reiterated the department’s collaboration with stakeholders to implement measures such as proper signage, road markings, and lighting to enhance visibility and ensure safer road conditions for all road users.
