The Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department emphasizes the need for educating drivers on the safe and proper usage of roundabouts.
Traffic Officer Ronald Payne highlighted this concern during the weekly ‘Road Safety and You’ program.
He expressed that a significant challenge is observed in individuals, especially those from outside the area, who are unfamiliar with roundabout rules, leading to accidents.
Traffic Officer Sgt. Payne mentioned that many drivers are unaware of basic rules governing roundabouts, prompting the police to question drivers during interactions.
Payne stressed the importance of understanding speed limits, correct postures, and emergency procedures when navigating roundabouts.
Another challenge raised by Payne is the misuse of roundabouts and roadways for events like wedding parties, causing disruptions for emergency vehicles.
He urged citizens to be mindful of traffic and emergency vehicles, advising against stopping within roundabouts.
Despite these challenges, the Traffic Department remains committed to raising awareness and conducting educational exercises to inform drivers and road users about the safe and proper utilization of roundabouts.
