Guyana Police Force Receives $50M in Traffic Equipment to Enhance Road Safety

January 23, 2025

The Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department has been equipped with new tools aimed at improving traffic safety and operations across the country.

A donation worth $50 million was officially handed over earlier today at the Tactical Service Unit Tarmac at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.

The donation included a range of essential equipment such as mobile roadblocks, lighted vests, 20 electronic tablets, and two speed guns.

These items will help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Traffic Department in enforcing road safety regulations.

Minister of Public Works, Hon. Juan Edghill, underscored the significance of the donation, emphasizing that the equipment would help reduce road accidents and improve safety on the roadways.

He noted that the funds were made available through the conclusion of a road program and were reallocated with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to prioritize traffic safety.

IDB Country Representative, Lorena Salazar, expressed her organization’s satisfaction with collaborating on the initiative, reinforcing the IDB’s commitment to supporting road safety efforts in Guyana.

She emphasized the importance of ensuring safer and more orderly roadways, stating, “It’s better to lose one minute in life than the life in one minute.”

In accepting the donation, Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken thanked the IDB and the Ministry of Public Works, noting that the new equipment will significantly contribute to the modernization of the Guyana Police Force’s traffic operations, enhancing the ability to keep the roads safer for all citizens.
