Guyana Police Force Prioritizes Community Relations and Outreach for 2024

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is gearing up to strengthen its relationship with the community, placing a major emphasis on community policing and outreach initiatives.

Commissioner Clifton Hicken announced the force’s commitment to building trust and confidence among citizens through increased community engagement.

Acknowledging the positive impact of stakeholder participation in reducing serious crimes, Commissioner Hicken highlighted the collaborative efforts with over 16-17 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government ministries, agencies, and faith-based organizations.

This collaborative approach, he noted, is part of a more contemporary perspective on policing.

A substantial budget allocation of 152 million dollars for community policing in 2024 underscores the force’s dedication to developing and reinforcing new community policing groups nationwide.

Commissioner Hicken emphasized the importance of seeking public feedback to enhance policing at the community level, emphasizing that the public and police must work together closely.

In line with this goal, the GPF’s Community Relations Department plans to increase the number of community outreaches throughout the year.

The objective is to foster positive relations between the police force and the community, creating an environment of mutual understanding and cooperation.

The Commissioner concluded by stating that the Cooperative Communications Unit (CCU) would extend its presence into every department and division, actively engaging with individuals on the ground to gather valuable feedback.

This collaborative and community-oriented approach reflects the GPF’s commitment to a safer and more secure environment for all.
