To ensure a smooth flow of traffic in Georgetown during the busy holiday season, the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department has rolled out a comprehensive management plan.
This plan includes strategic placements of traffic ranks in key areas to reduce congestion and improve vehicle movement in the capital city.
Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, shared that ranks will be deployed across more than a dozen key locations in Georgetown, with a particular focus on busy areas such as Regent Street, Water Street, Camp Street, Main Street, Hadfield Street, Robb Street, and Avenue of the Republic.
“We will have fixed point placements in these areas, and our priority will be to ensure the traffic moves smoothly during the holiday rush,” Singh explained.
To further alleviate congestion, the public is encouraged to use centralized parking areas located on the outskirts of the city, where shuttle services will be available to transport passengers into the heart of Georgetown.
These parking areas include spaces at Mahaica, Providence, the National Stadium, the National Cultural Centre Tarmac, Durban Park, the National Parks Commission, and the railway line between Vlissingen Road and Parade Street.
“Park and ride is a convenient option, especially with shuttle services available to bring you directly into the city,” Singh said.
Security measures will also be enhanced, including the use of the Smart City security system at strategic locations to ensure the safety of parked vehicles.
Singh also emphasized the importance of maintaining the flow of essential goods during the holiday season, with roving patrols by motorcars, motorcycles, and bicycles in each sector.
Containerized cargo movements will be supported to ensure that business operations continue without disruption.
The Christmas policing plan is already in effect and will remain active until January 15, 2025, to manage the increased traffic and ensure safety during this busy time of year.
