The Guyana Police Force (GPF) recently held its Annual End-of-Year Awards Ceremony at the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary, to honor the dedicated service and significant achievements of its members throughout 2024.

Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken addressed the gathering, outlining the Force’s progress in several key areas, including crime prevention, road safety, and operational effectiveness.

Hicken attributed the improvements in crime fighting to the implementation of data-driven strategies, such as crime mapping, analytical policing, and increased patrols in high-crime areas.

These initiatives, alongside specialized units within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) focused on tackling cybercrime and securing electronic evidence, contributed to the Force’s success.

The Commissioner also highlighted the substantial investment in training and development, with 1,941 scholarships awarded to officers throughout the year.

An additional 110 ranks received sponsorships for local and regional training programs.

The GPF’s police training curriculum was revamped to meet the demands of modern policing, allowing officers to graduate with degrees or postgraduate diplomas depending on their rank.

Technological advancements were also a priority for the GPF in 2024, as the Force launched its official website and radio station, automated human resource functions, and upgraded its forensic unit to improve crime analysis and evidence processing.

These changes were aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and modernizing the Force to better serve the public.

While reflecting on the successes, Hicken acknowledged the challenges still faced by the GPF, including budget constraints, resource allocation, and the constantly evolving nature of crime.

He assured that the Force remains committed to addressing these issues through continued partnerships and operational reforms.

The ceremony also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Private Sector, which has been instrumental in supporting the Force’s initiatives.

Officers were recognized not only for their contributions to crime prevention but also for their engagement in community service and sports, demonstrating the holistic approach the GPF takes in fulfilling its duties.

In closing, the Commissioner expressed his gratitude for the hard work and dedication of the ranks, reinforcing the Force’s commitment to fostering a safer and more secure Guyana for all.
